Rowing is frequently used as a metaphor in business for what Teamwork ideally looks like. Posters of eight-person rowing teams adorn offices showing rowers perfectly aligned and in perfect synchronicity, but there is a key member sitting at the back facing the team without oars, facing forward, called the Coxswain or Cox.
The Cox’s job is noticeably different from everyone else’s - he/she does not row the boat, but steers it, executing race strategy, keeping the crew synchronized and motivated and is the only team member facing forward.
Just as this rowing scene is a powerful metaphor for teamwork the Coxswain also provides powerful lessons about leadership and bringing teams together i.e., Effective Leadership acts as the catalyst for fostering high performing teams, where shared vision, open communication, and trust combine to create an environment conducive to collaboration and success!
